Maclean’s 2021 university rankings ranked mathematics and computer science at the University of Waterloo first in Canada.

Based on program reputation, both mathematics and computer science tied in first place with the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia. Mathematics tied the same two universities for research reputation, while the computer science research program tied with Toronto. Waterloo’s engineering program was also ranked first in Canada, tied with Toronto.

“This is wonderful news across the board,” said Mark Giesbrecht, dean of the Faculty of Mathematics. “Congratulations to our faculty, staff and students in mathematics and computer science and to our colleagues across the tracks in engineering who have all worked hard to earn this top spot in Maclean’s annual rankings.”

This year marks Maclean’s 30th annual university rankings, continuing a mandate established in 1991 to provide essential information in a comprehensive package to help students choose the university that best suits their needs. Reputation scores were based on survey responses from 1,000 faculty members and senior administrators across Canada.

The results of Maclean’s 2021 university rankings were released on October 8, 2020.
