Three graduating PhD students in the Faculty of Mathematics were awarded the inaugural Mathematics Doctoral Prizes. Hanmeng (Harmony) Zhan from Combinatorics and Optimization placed first, and Boyu Li and Ruizhang Jin from Pure Mathematics won second and third places respectively.
The University Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Global Research Rankings of Actuarial Science and Risk Management and Insurance has ranked the University of Waterloo the number one non-business, degree-granting school worldwide. Waterloo was ranked first in both the number of papers in the leading risk and insurance journal, as well as in the top four leading actuarial journals.
Out of 100 students competing at the Data Open Championship, 11 of them were from the University of Waterloo, making it the institution with the largest number of competitors to compete in the championship.

The Waterloo team placed 10th at the recent William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition. The team members were Albert Gevorgyan, Anzo Teh, and Fengyang Wang. Both Gevorgyan and Wang are also Michael and Ophelia Olympiad Scholarship winners.
University Professor M. Tamer Özsu has received the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award in Computer Science from CS-Can/Info-Can. Making your house “smart” could soon become cheaper and easier, thanks to new technology developed by researchers at the University of Waterloo.
Their recent study describes an approach that can be used to deploy, for the first time, battery-free sensors into a home using existing WiFi networks. Previous attempts to use battery-free sensors ran into some obstacles making the efforts impractical. These hurdles include the need to modify existing WiFi access points, challenges with security protocols, and the need to use energy-hungry components.
Cheriton School of Computer Science Professor Bin Ma has received $462,998 in research support from Genome Canada for an ambitious three-year project titled “Software for peptide identification and quantification from large mass spectrometry data using data independent acquisition.” Additional funds bring the total amount to $925,987.
