At today’s convocation ceremony, two graduates from the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization were recognized as the Alumni Gold Medallists for their academic work. André Linhares Rodrigues is awarded Recognition of Academic Achievement Doctoral, and Samuel Erik Jaques for Recognition of Academic Achievement Master’s.
Isaac Ellmen (BMath ’19) and his co-founder Danielle Rose (BSc ‘19, University of Guelph) were one of the recipients of the grand prize of direct equity investments worth $50,000 in the Velocity Fund Competition in Toronto on September 19, 2019. SquidBio was started in November of 2018 and later joined Velocity Science.
On Wednesday, September 18, 2019, the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science (SAS) celebrated the 50th anniversary of Professor Mary Thompson as a faculty member in the department. Many current faculty and staff and a number of retired professors gathered in the SAS Lounge and celebrated Mary’s milestone with cake, coffee and fruits. The Vice-President, Research & International, of University of Waterloo, Professor Charmaine Dean, who was a PhD graduate from the department, sent a beautiful bouquet to congratulate Mary on this special occasion.
Professors Lap Chi Lau and Daniel Vogel have been named 2019 David R. Cheriton Faculty Fellows, positions they will hold until 2022. Melissa McCorriston has received a Vector Scholarship in Artificial Intelligence from the Vector Institute. These $17,500 scholarships recognize promising scholars and researchers in Ontario and support their further studies in a top provincial artificial intelligence–related master’s program.
Three Faculty of Mathematics researchers have been named fellows of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) and members of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.
