Eric Veach
Waterloo Mathematics alumnus Eric Veach, was awarded two Academy Awards for movie innovation from Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at a recent gala. Veach joins 52 others recognized for 19 scientific and technical achievements in film this past year.

"This is for work that is 15 years old but is essentially having an impact now. For me, it just seems like this is an incredible bonus. I've been doing nothing in graphics for 15 years and then the next thing you know, the Academy is calling me up and wants to talk to me about my thesis work," said Veach in a recent interview with The Canadian Press.

Veach graduated from Waterloo in 1990 completing a Bachelor of Mathematics majoring in Combinatorics and Optimization and Computer Science. Upon graduation, Veach was awarded an Alumni Gold Medal.

In 2008 Veach was awarded the J. W. Graham Medal in Computing & Innovation for his work at Google as a distinguished software engineer. Previously Veach had developed computer graphics software for Pixar Animation Studios (with credits in three movies).
