The Faculty of Mathematics Research Office recently announced its 2021 recipients of the Golden Jubilee Research Excellence Award. Eduardo Martin-Martinez, an associate professor in applied mathematics, and Sophie Spirkl, an assistant professor in combinatorics and optimization, were this year’s winners.

July 10 is Nikola Tesla’s birthday. He was born 165 years ago. Tesla is one of the most enigmatic figures in the STEM world, and had he been alive today, he would be a massive fan of the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo.

The Faculty of Mathematics Employee Health and Well-being Committee is hosting its annual community assemblies July 14-29.

All staff and faculty members are welcome to participate. The assemblies provide a confidential and safe environment in which employees can discuss any challenges and raise concerns related to health and well-being.

Distinguished Professor Emeritus Peter Forsyth, Professor Ken Vetzal from the School of Accounting and Finance, and Graham Westmacott, portfolio manager at PWL Capital, have received the 2021 Brockett–Shapiro Actuarial Journal Award from ARIA — the American Risk and Insurance Association. 

Research conducted by recent computer science master’s graduate Iman Akbari received a Best Student Paper award at SIGMETRICS 2021, the flagship conference of the Association for Computing Machinery’s special interest group for the computer systems performance evaluation community.

Vivek Goel, incoming president and vice-chancellor of the University of Waterloo, has been named a fellow of the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences.

Brian E. Forrest, professor of Pure Mathematics, has been named a Fellow of the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS). The fellowship is awarded for outstanding contributions in research, teaching and learning and service in fulfillment of CMS mandates and goals.

"It's an honour and something I'm pretty proud of," says Forrest. "This is a wonderful way to stay connected to the Canadian Mathematical Society, a group that's been a valuable part of my career."

Danish Farid, a Master of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (MDSAI) student, likes to keep his options open in many aspects of his life. While working an 8-month co-op at Huawei Technologies Canada, one of the things he appreciated most was being able to move between teams to observe and participate in the different types of work each one focused on.
