CFI funding 2012-13

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and the University of Waterloo announced funding for 18 new projects across the University. This federal government funding helps pay for equipment, building additions and other infrastructure associated with research.

The University media release focuses on CFI-funded research projects that will investigate new techniques of analyzing big data.

SSC honours Bovas Abraham

The Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) has awarded Honorary Membership to Bovas Abraham, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo. The citation for the award reads: 

Impressive results for the Faculty of Mathematics in 2013 QS World University Rankings by Subject

Computer Science and Information Systems, Mathematics, and Statistics and Operational Research are among the Waterloo subject areas that have shown increasing strength in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Overall, the University of Waterloo features in the world’s elite (Top 200) institutions in 19 of the 30 subjects featured in this year’s rankings.

Ontario Research Fund

Professors Ashraf Aboulnaga (Cheriton School of Computer Science), Ali Ghodsi (Department of Statistics & Actuarial Science), Ian Goldberg (Cheriton School of Computer Science) and Kristen Morris (Department of Applied Mathematics) have received new funding from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation's Ontario Research Fund. Through this fund, the provincial government "is providing talented researchers with the support they need to undertake cutting-edge research."

When people picture a mathematician, they often imagine someone serious and anti-social, working alone in an office.

Not so in the real world of mathematics, and not so at the Canadian Team Mathematics Contest (CTMC)! The University of Waterloo’s Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) hosts this challenging, collaboration-based contest on Wednesday, April 10.

Two exceptional student teachers
