Troy Vasiga and J.P. Pretti have wrapped up their time with "Team Canada" at the 25th International Olympiad in Informatics in Brisbane, Australia.
Approximately 80 countries and 300 students participated. Contestants competed by writing computer programs to solve challenging algorithmic tasks on two five-hour days of competition.
Congratulations to Professors Yu-Ru Liu and Dan Wolczuk, winners of the 2013 Faculty of Mathematics Award for Distinction in Teaching!
Professor Liu has achieved consistently excellent student evaluation scores both in first-year core courses and in the fourth-year/graduate Pure Mathematics course on Fields and Galois Theory. Her students have high praise for the preparation, delivery and effectiveness of her teaching.

1,044 mathematics students will cross the stage today in two ceremonies as convocation continues.
The second annual Jessie W.H. Zou Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research will be awarded to graduating student Ahmad Abdi at convocation on June 14. Ahmad is seen here with Dean Ian Goulden (right) and Associate Dean Research Robin Cohen (left).
The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and the University of Waterloo announced funding for 18 new projects across the University. This federal government funding helps pay for equipment, building additions and other infrastructure associated with research.
The University media release focuses on CFI-funded research projects that will investigate new techniques of analyzing big data.
The Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) has awarded Honorary Membership to Bovas Abraham, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo. The citation for the award reads:
Computer Science and Information Systems, Mathematics, and Statistics and Operational Research are among the Waterloo subject areas that have shown increasing strength in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Overall, the University of Waterloo features in the world’s elite (Top 200) institutions in 19 of the 30 subjects featured in this year’s rankings.

Waterloo students Frank Ban, Kangning (Colin) Chen and Hao Sun received honourable mentions.
Professors Ashraf Aboulnaga (Cheriton School of Computer Science), Ali Ghodsi (Department of Statistics & Actuarial Science), Ian Goldberg (Cheriton School of Computer Science) and Kristen Morris (Department of Applied Mathematics) have received new funding from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation's Ontario Research Fund. Through this fund, the provincial government "is providing talented researchers with the support they need to undertake cutting-edge research."
